Introduction

Kick & Fennick is a brand new platforming game created exclusively for the PlayStation Vita that was released on February 3, 2015; over a year after its initial announcement at Gamescom 2013. You play as a boy named Kick as you jump through forty-five levels of lengthy platforming, bouncing pads, and avoiding electrical surges while helping Fennick get to the Core Tower to give him a brand new battery pack.

NOTE: There are reports of save files being corrupted as a result of the game’s crashing issues. If you have PlayStation Plus, be sure to backup your save files after every one or two levels you have completed (regardless of whether or not you got a Diamond Star in each stage or that specific stage’s Special Gear), as these issues will more or less prevent you from getting 100% of all trophies in the game, or from completing the game in general.

In the event that you have already backed up your save, but then the game crashes and your save file becomes corrupted due to it, be sure that you download the save file you have already uploaded to your PS+ cloud storage and continue the game from there. (Thanks to TsubakiCalamity for the heads-up in this thread.)

Walkthrough

Step 1: Complete the game on Hard difficulty
I highly advise doing this first before cleaning up on how many Special Gears or Diamond Stars you may be missing during your first playthrough of the game. If you have issues getting past certain obstacles, be sure you use the tips provided in the guide to help you as you progress through the game’s stages. Trophies unlocked upon finishing this step consist of the following:

Waking Up
Made a Friend
Tricked
Height Advantage
Out for the Count
Almost There
Close Call
The End
Kicking Butt

In addition to the above trophies, playing through the game is a good way to unlock each of the following long-term trophies that you can obtain as you progress through the game:

Best Friends Forever
Grounded
Recoil Enthusiast

Step 2: Collecting All Special Gears and Unlocking all Costumes for Kick
In this game, there are a total of forty-five special gears that are hidden around each of the game’s stages. Some areas are easy to find, but others may be hard to reach unless you perform a specific maneuver. In addition, each three gears you collect in the game’s stages will unlock new costumes for Kick to use. Upon completing this step, you should now have the following trophies:

All Dressed Up
Gear Collector

Step 3: Getting a Diamond Star in all levels
Because of the nature of collecting Power Nodes in forty-three of the game’s stages, I highly advise saving this step for last as the nature of collecting Power Nodes can be time consuming and some spots where you can find them require strict trajectory shots from your Gun to jump to that specific spot. Once completed, you will now have the following trophy in your possession:

The Diamond Collection

15 trophies ( 13  )

  • Earn a diamond star on every level

In Kick & Fennick, the grade (designated by a star) you will get depends greatly on how many Power Nodes you have collected in each one of the game’s forty-five levels. All stars and how many nodes you need to collect in each level are described below:

    In order (from left to right): Bronze (1 - 20), Silver (21 - 40), Gold (41 - 49), Diamond (50)

Just as the trophy’s description says, you will need to get a Diamond Star (obtained for collecting fifty nodes in each level) in all forty-five levels in the game (Chapter 1, Level 1 and Chapter 5, Level 10 do not contain any nodes whatsoever, so obtaining a Diamond Star in those two levels is easy) to unlock it. Whatever difficulty you're playing on when going for a Diamond Star does not matter at all.

  • Complete the game on Hard difficulty

For this and the trophy below it, you will need to clear the game on Hard difficulty for the first time. There are differences while playing the game on a certain difficulty, such as enemies and hazards (like bottomless pits and electrical surges) dealing more damage (therefore resulting in Fennick taking up more energy in return every time he saves you), and the way how the trajectory in Kick’s gun while aiming it inside out for him to jump has a different designation, as seen in the screenshots below:

Top: The gun’s jumping trajectory while playing in Easy and/or Normal difficulty.
Bottom: The gun’s jumping trajectory (replaced with an arrow) while playing in Hard difficulty.

Tips for playing through the game:

    • Patience is key to completing each level and finding a solution on how to get around a certain area without trial and error.
    • Boss strategies are the same regardless of difficulty and can be found in their respective trophies.
    • Always press or touch the icon in the upper left hand corner of the to make Fennick reveal the next waypoint to locate the area you will need to go to next.
    • When using bounce pads, you will need to make note of your speed and momentum while bouncing as each time you turn will make you slower and lose your momentum. If you’re jumping from sideways pads, always shoot at the one on top of the one you bounced from.
    • In times where the game will go into slow motion, act quickly using your gun (you can aim it with the or the ) to either jump or shoot a switch/enemy to advance through the stage.

Strategy for the Game's Final Boss:

The final boss of the game appears in the tenth stage of Chapter 5, which is also the final level of the game. In this level, you will not have Fennick at your side, which makes you think if dealing this boss without him being able to save you will make it harder; however, it isn't, as you cannot get hit from touching the red portals that appear in this stage, or by the boss. In addition, this boss actually has a health meter (which can be seen in the top right hand corner of the game screen) unlike the other bosses in this game.

In the arena, there are four generators that appear to help you fight against the boss by shooting your gun while standing on them, which creates a ball of electricity that stuns it whenever the ball makes contact with it. However, if the robot runs toward you while standing on any of the generators, they will become unavailable until it moves away from them within a certain distance; additionally, each generator you use (whether the ball is the robot or not) will have a cool down duration that will last a few seconds, so be sure to use it wisely.

Top: Kick standing on one of the generators.
Middle: The electric ball that came from one of the generators after Kick shoots with his gun.
Bottom: The robot getting stunned by said electric ball.

The robot itself attacks using two patterns; its stomping attack (shared with the first through third bosses), and its laser beam (shared with the third boss). If it does its stomping attack while you are in a corner in either the left or right side of the arena, immediately use your gun to jump on the green portal as you will be able to teleport above it from the red portal. In the event where it does its laser attack, you will need to avoid it by timing your jumps correctly, or by using the portals to avoid it in a faster pace.

Repeat these processes as much as possible until you have defeated the boss and finished the game.

  • Finish the game on any difficulty

Just as the trophy’s description says, you will need to complete all forty-five levels of the game in any difficulty. If you want to keep track of what difficulty you cleared a level on and whatever grade you have for it, select “Levels” in the main menu, as seen in the screenshot below:

As you can see, the squares with icons in the top and bottom right corners designate two things: The difficulty you completed that stage on (top right) and the grade that you got depending on how many Power Nodes you have collected in that particular stage (bottom right). Squares that do not have those icons are levels that are incomplete, while dark colored squares are levels that are not unlocked.

For more information and tips on how to play this game, see “Kicking Butt”.

  • Defeat the robot at the end of chapter 1

Story related and cannot be missed. You will encounter the first boss of this game midway through the fifth level of Chapter 1.

This boss is really easy to deal with, as it has no real attack patterns aside from a stomping attack that not only attacks you, but also breaks a certain portion of the floor that once destroyed will defeat this boss. What you’ll need to do is shoot it at least once, then whenever the robot steps back, walk to the broken wall and turn back quickly whenever it does its stomping attack. Repeat this process two more times until the boss is defeated and the trophy pops.

  • Defeat the robot at the end of chapter 2

Story related and cannot be missed. You will encounter the game’s second boss at the end of Chapter 2, Level 10.

Despite what this trophy’s description says, you will actually need to escape this boss after shooting three switches that open the three doors that are needed for you to escape it. The first switch you can find is found high up in the left side of the arena (where you first enter it), as seen in the screenshot below:

For the first area, you will need to make a series of jumps using your gun to reach the switch that opens the right door that will allow you to escape from this boss. However, you will need to note that you should time your jumps accordingly as there are electric surges in some portions of this area.

Once you are able to get past those electric surges and make it to the top of the area with the switch, shoot it, and the right door will now be opened after the short cutscene that will play upon shooting said switch. Afterwards, walk to the left to exit that part of the fight and go on to the middle of the stage, where you will encounter another puzzle to go through that will allow you to open the door in the middle.

For the second switch, you will need to get through a series of puzzles using elevators to reach it. The switch that activates the elevators is different from the one you want to get to. In this case, I recommend using the elevator on the right to reach that switch as I personally find that one to be easier. Be warned that if you miss the elevator the first time after reaching the area that will allow you to avoid the surge, you will need to wait patiently until it comes back up.

Once you see it appearing again, you should easily jump your way to the elevator, but be sure that you don’t touch the surge that appears below you. If you’re able to reach the elevator again, you will now be able to shoot the switch that allows you to open the middle door on the right-hand side of the arena.

Additionally, you can also go to the red area above the switch you just shot that will charge up your gun to allow Kick to jump higher while in mid-air. This is one thing I greatly recommend before moving on to the third and final switch that will open the left door.

This section of the arena is much like the first section (where you will need to time your jumps accordingly to avoid getting into the electric surges and take up energy for Fennick to save you), except this time there is a broken part of the wall you can go to so you can recharge Fennick’s energy in the event where his energy bar is blinking, but if you are high on that amount, I highly recommend saving that part for after you press the switch if you want to get the Diamond Star for this stage.

Once you have made it up to the switch that opens the left door for you to escape this boss, shoot the switch and make a run to the right. If you make it to the door, a cutscene will play and your trophy will be unlocked after the stage ends (regardless of what grade or whether or not you got its Special Gear).

  • Knock out the robot at the end of chapter 3

Story related and cannot be missed. You will encounter the game’s third boss at the end of Chapter 3, Level 10.

In this fight, there are three switches that control a bumper that knocks the boss back once it is in its range after you shoot it, as seen in the screenshot below:

If the boss is below the switch that operates the bumper, shoot it as fast as you can before it escapes from the bumper’s range. If done successfully, the bumper will attack the robot and knock it back. As this boss takes four hits, repeat this process at least three more times until you have defeated and unlock this trophy midway through the stage.

However, keep in mind that this boss not only has one attack, but two, as this is a new attack that is shared between this boss and the final boss of the game. This attack allows it to shoot a laser that will knock Kick back if he does not dodge it. While the laser may take up some time to charge, be sure you react as quickly as possible to prevent it from touching you.

Top Image: The robot while it's charging the laser.
Middle image: The laser itself, which Kick is dodging it.
Bottom Image: The laser knocking Kick back whenever he touches it.

  • Escape the robot at the end of chapter 4

Story related and cannot be missed. You will encounter the game’s fourth boss at the end of Chapter 4, Level 10.

Like the second boss of the game, you will need to escape it as fast as possible. There will be moments where the game will go into slow motion (such as making a strict jump in mid-air, avoiding an electrical surge, etc.). In those moments, you will need to either jump or shoot a switch in order to advance through the stage.

If the boss gets near you, or if you fall down to a bottomless pit (or touch an electric surge), you will be forced to start this level again from the beginning of the boss fight (the only checkpoint in this stage). In the final slow-motion segment of it, you will need to jump at the portal to escape from this boss; doing so will unlock your trophy once the level ends.

  • Wake up from a deep sleep

Story related and cannot be missed.

This trophy will be unlocked as soon as you start the game for the first time.

  • Find Fennick

Story related and cannot be missed.

This trophy will be unlocked at the start of Chapter 1, Level 2 after you meet Fennick.

  • Find a way to the Core Tower

Story related and cannot be missed.

This trophy will be unlocked after a cutscene that occurs near the end of Chapter 4, Level 1.

  • Find all special gears

Next to the Power Nodes that grade you based on how many you have acquired in each stage, Special Gears are the second form of this game’s collectible items. However, unlike nodes, these items do not affect what star grade you will get upon clearing a stage with all nodes collected, but they do have their own special mark that signifies whether or not you have already collected the hidden special gear in that stage, as seen in the screenshots below:

Top: Chapter 2, Level 8 without its Special Gear collected.
Bottom: Chapter 1, Level 5 with its Special Gear already collected.

There are a total of forty-five Special Gears that are hidden within each stage, and as the trophy’s description says, you will need to find and collect all of them to unlock it. For reference on what the gears look like in a stage, refer to the following screenshot:

You will unlock the “All Dressed Up” trophy after collecting thirty-three Special Gears, but for this trophy, you will need to collect at least twelve more to complete the forty-five gears you need to collect for this game.

  • Jump 1500 times

To make Kick jump, you will need to either tilt down depending on the distance between you and the area you want to jump to and press to shoot his gun downward, or drag your finger down on the and let go of it to make him jump. Once you have done your first jump, you can also do a second one by tilting the or touching the in any direction you wish to jump depending on where you aim it. Keep in mind that you can only jump twice (or jump once, then shoot if you’re attacking an enemy while in mid-air).

As the description says, you will need to let Kick jump at least 1,500 times, which you will obtain as you progress through the game’s story. Whether the jumps come from either the or the does not matter at all.

  • Get saved by Fennick 50 times

For this trophy, you will need to have Fennick save you at least fifty times. Whether they're electrical surges, enemies, or bottomless pits do not matter, but be warned that it does take up energy from Fennick (the amount he takes up depends on the difficulty you’re playing on, but you can easily replenish it by collecting Power Nodes).

Additionally, you can easily unlock this particular trophy by touching the electric surge on Chapter 1, Level 3, as seen in the screenshot below. Be sure to repeat this process by touching it at least until the trophy pops once you touch it for the fiftieth time:

  • Shoot down 200 enemies

Shooting an enemy is done the same way as jumping in this game, except that you will need to tilt the or point your finger on the Vita’s in the direction Kick is facing to shoot an enemy down.

As the trophy says, you will need to kill at least 200 enemies to unlock it, though the earliest you can get it is either during Chapter 3, or in the later part of Chapter 2 (depending on how many enemies you have killed beforehand).

  • Collect all outfits

In the game, there are a total of twelve outfits to choose from while playing as Kick; however, only one of them is available from the start, while the other eleven need to be unlocked.

You will unlock a new outfit after each three Special Gears you collect (Example: If you collected three gears during Chapter 1, you will unlock Kick’s second outfit, while collecting six gears will unlock his third outfit, and so on). The trophy will be unlocked after collecting at least thirty-three Special Gears (which will unlock Kick’s final outfit) in any one of the game’s forty-five stages.

For more information on Special Gears, please refer to “Gear Collector”.
