Introduction:
Welcome to my first ever guide. Mortal Kombat makes a big splash on the new Vita handheld gaming console after last year's successful release on the home consoles. This version includes almost everything that the console version had to offer as well as exclusive content, including a bonus challenge tower and plenty of bonus costumes whilst also making use of the Vita’s touch and tilt controls.
There are multiple game modes available and the trophies can be obtained in any order as you see fit, however the order specified below is the route that I followed in trying to earn the Platinum as quickly as possible. The Platinum is a very hard one to get considering it is recommended that the mastering trophies are boosted online with a friend.
Step 1: Tutorials
Complete the Tutorial and Fatality trainer for two easy trophies, which are A For Effort and License To Kill respectively. If you perform the Fatality in the Fatality Tutorial using the touch screen, you will also obtain Touch And Go.
Step 2: Story Mode
Complete the Mortal Kombat story on beginner difficulty (the story mode difficulty can be changed in the Options menu) and you will earn the Halfway There and Back In Time trophies. This will take you around five to six hours to finish.
Step 3: Arcade Tag Ladder with Cyrax and Sektor
This is the classic Mortal Kombat Arcade Ladder which involves fighting ten matches of CPU opponents and ending in a final showdown with the boss, Shao Kahn. You can either play through this solo or with two fighters as a tag team. I would recommend setting the options to one round with a 60 second time limit so that the matches are completed quicker and you get enough time to charge up the super meter to perform an X-Ray attack.
On the first run, choose Cyrax and Sektor and play through the tag ladder on beginner difficulty without blocking (don’t use the R button at all). Also in the process, make a conscious effort to perform each character's forward and backward throws, X-Ray Attack, Fatality, Babality and a Stage Fatality (if you get to fight on a stage where you can perform one). You will earn six trophies if you undertake these actions, which are Fatality, Finish Him?, Complet-ality, Robots Rule, What Does This Button Do?? and Where’s The Arcade?.
Step 4: Arcade Champion
Repeat the same process as above choosing two characters at a time in tag ladders until you defeat the Arcade Ladder on beginner difficulty with all 32 characters. It’s easier to keep track of your progress if you work your way through the characters from top to bottom, one row at a time.
Upon defeating the ladder, you will unlock the endings for both characters, however the alternate costume will only unlock for whichever character was chosen first on the tag team.
While playing as Sonya, performing her X-Ray Attack will result in a 10-hit combo, therefore unlocking the Block This! trophy. As well as this, performing a tag combo with any team will earn you the Tag, You're It! trophy.
An important thing to note is when you are playing as Kratos or Cyber-Sub-Zero. You have to ensure that Kratos is chosen as the first character as you can unlock his alternate costume only by defeating the ladder. Cyber Sub-Zero does not have any alternate costume so it’s recommended that he is chosen as the second character.
If you followed the above, you will earn six trophies which are There Will Be Blood!, The Grappler, e-X-cellent, Finish What You Start, Ultimate Humiliation and finally Arcade Champion.
Step 5: Ladder Master
This one requires you to beat the Ladder on Expert difficulty. For this, I would recommend setting the options to two rounds to win with a 60 second time limit. This is because you can still obtain the trophy even if you lose a round but go on to win the match, therefore giving you more margin for error.
This may take you a few tries depending on your skill and requires some patience, but it's not that hard. Block as much as possible to avoid taking too much damage from combos. Once you defeat the ladder you will earn the Ladder Master trophy.
Step 6: Hidden Ladder Battles
There are four hidden battles that can be unlocked while fighting through the Arcade Ladder. Ensure that you set the options to two rounds to win with a 60 second time limit. The battles against Smoke, Reptile and Noob can only be unlocked when fighting on the Living Forest, Pit (Night) and Temple Arenas respectively. The hidden Jade battle is the hardest of all and will take quite a lot of tries to complete. Once you have unlocked all of the hidden battles, you will earn four trophies, these being Hide And Seek, Pit Master, Brotherhood Of Shadow and You Found Me.
Step 7: Challenge Tower
The Tower requires you to complete 300 missions which involve a variety of challenges of increasing difficulty. There are also various minigames along the way which involve breaking objects, a cups game, playing slot reels and testing striking power accuracy. Completing the Tower Challenges award Koins which can be used to unlock items in the Krypt as well as skip tough challenges. However, I’d recommend that you complete every challenge instead of skipping them.
In the process of completing the tower you can earn the Tower Apprentice, Luck Be A Lady, Dim Mak, These Aren't My Glasses and I 'Might' Be The Strongest trophies. After completing all of the Tower Challenges, you will earn Tower Master and unlock Mileena’s third alternate costume which would also unlock the Best…Alternate...Ever! trophy.
Step 8: Krypt
By now, you should have enough Koins to unlock everything that is available in the Krypt. In doing so, you will earn three trophies: Undertaker, You’ve Got Style! and The Krypt Keeper.
Step 9: Bonus Challenge Tower
This tower is exclusive to the Vita version of Mortal Kombat and consists of 150 missions which make use of the Vita’s touch and tilt controls. The minigames along the way include a test of balance skills using the tilt controls whilst having objects thrown at you and a fruit ninja type slicing game which uses the touch screen.
In the process of completing the Bonus Tower, you can earn the trophies The Fall Guy, Tower Recruit, Tower Champion and Balancing Act. After completing all challenges of the Bonus Tower, you will earn the Tower God trophy and unlock alternate costumes for Skarlet, Kenshi and Rain, which would also unlock the trophy Three's Company. Upon completion of the 10 slice minigame challenges in the tower, a further five are unlocked which are separate from the tower missions. Completing all 15 of these slice challenges will earn you the Slice Of Life trophy.
Step 10: Online Trophies
Finally it's time to unlock all of the online trophies. You will earn the Tough Guy trophy for winning any versus match (Ranked, Player or Private.) The trophies Humiliation, Cyber Challenger and Wavenet… can easily be boosted in Private versus matches while working towards the mastering trophies if you feel the need to do so.
Note: The remaining 3 online trophies namely Outstanding!, Don't Jump! and Throws Are For Champs which are earned only by playing RANKED matches cannot be earned anymore due to the GameSpy server shutdown.
Step 11: Mastering Characters
Lastly, the most dreaded and time consuming trophies in the game will be the My Kung Fu Is Strong for mastering one character and My Kung Fu Is Stronger for mastering all 32 characters. These would most definitely require a boosting partner to make things go quicker. Refer to the Trophy Boosting Thread for boosting partners.
Once you earn these time consuming trophies, the extremely difficult Platinum Trophy will be yours to keep. ( Note: Sadly this trophy is no longer possible due to the GameSpy shutdown )
Congratulations to you if you've earned the Platinum!
