Square Enix has revealed that the upcoming Final Fantasy VII will be released as a “multi-part series”. That’s right, it would appear they’re making the classic JRPG episodic.

Beyond that, details are pretty sparse. Square Enix’s exact words are that, “Final Fantasy VII Remake will be told across a multi-part series, with each entry providing its own unique experience.” What remains to be revealed is how often will these “parts” will release, how many of them will there be and how much they’ll cost. And also just why?

Weird huh? We’re attempting to find out more. In the meantime, check out the latest trailer for the game, which debuted during Sony’s PlayStation Experience 2015 keynote over the weekend. FFVII Remake does not have a release date.

  • Oh.
  • The sword doesn't fit into a single full release.
  • What's next for this? Microtransactions to buy extra gil...?
  • Well this is stupid. Who wants to play a part of the game and wait for the rest of it!?
  • Because 10 episodes for 15€ each will net more than a single game for 70€.
  • @3 would not be surprised lol. Maybe released across 5 episodes, 2 eps for disc 1, 2 eps for disc 2, and last ep for the shorter disc 3? Whatever, no longer day 1 purchase because i want to experience it in one hit.
  • Wow, great stuff Square, fans will be so happy... Everybody ask for shit like that... RIGHT?
  • Sounds a lot more like they are going to make 3 separate games. One for each disc perhaps. It is a massive game by today's low, low standards.
  • It's out already, it's £8.99 and it's a 4gb download on PS4
  • It don't say anything in description to say it's being done in parts but it is only £8.99 so it probably will be in parts.
  • @9 That's the PS4 port of the original...
  • No longer a day one buy, no matter how much I love VII this is just idiotic. I will instead just wait until the eventual complete edition disc in a few years.
  • REALLYYY NOT SO HAPPY ABOUT THIS... WTF is this shit... Multiple parts???? Makes me NOT want to buy this now... I guess Ill Wait for more info but as it stands now... HELL NO on day 1 and maybe not at all depending on how its done... FFFFFUUUUUCCCCKKKKKK!!!!!! End of year ruined now... thanks square!
  • People should look up the interview before making comments
  • If this is true than any interest I had in the remake has just evaporated.
  • Well looks like I'm just waiting for every episode to be out before playing this now. Just like I do with every Telltale game I buy. Don't feel like having to wait between episodes.
  • Maybe just be but multi-part series and episodic don't quite give the same image in my mind, it could just be PR buzzword crap but it could also mean something more like how XII had multiple titles. I could just be overly optimistic (and given its FF VII I almost definitely am) but I'm wondering if maybe this is a sign that the other titles from the FF VII compilation way be remade too. One of the biggest thoughts in my mind since the first reveal is if the shots of Edge (the city from Advent Children) in the first reveal were just there for the feel of reminiscence or if they planned to show events after the point where the original ends off.
  • @9 as 11 said, that is the pc version rereleased. Nothing too exciting, unless you want the trophies that have been added. It also fares better on a big 40" widescreen TV than the ps1 classic version.
  • What's with all the negativity? FF7 is a huge game, whether it was made in 97 or made now. This is a full remake. Every area, game mechanic, mechanic, graphic, sound, everything is being made with modern technology which is going to take much longer. On top of this, they are better integrating FF7 to fit with the other entries of the Compilation of FF7 along with a bunch of other extras I bet. And what if the world map becomes open-world? The work that will take would be astounding. I bet few of you have ever worked on a game of any size, it takes time and effort to make a game that's even remotely good. So you guys are moaning about the cons of having an episodic game. You can't play it one hit (although FF7 is a 25hr+ game) and you would have wait long periods to wait for the next part and get further with the story. But think of it this way, FF7 Remake is having a realtime battle system more akin to FF15 as it's biggest change and Square Enix knows that this game will either have every fan flock to them with money or ruin them forever. They will probably have surveys with the early episodes like FF15 had for its demo so they can get every aspect of this right for the fans. Also, I don't think it'll be released in any more than 5 parts. I think 3 would be ideal like in the original game. Maybe there might be extra stuff to do in between in the game like side quests and new areas (especially if disc 3 is its own part). Storywise there might some extra parts to keep us guessing between parts, even the original game had some amazing story piece to wow us before the fade to black and insert the next disc. I think these parts will work with FF7's best moments to create some good cliffhangers. (ie end of discs 1 and 2)
  • @19 there still isnt any certainty that its episodic, could be multiple games that to be honest I would buy
  • well, I'll wait for the final product before judging it. I'll have plenty of games to keep me happy (including the original FF7) until this arrives, which I'm guessing will be a long time.
  • i'll definitely be waiting till they are all out to get them rather than waiting for it, things like this i like to blitz through so being locked in place due to waiting for what is essentially DLC is a pain. The only way i would support this being episodic is if for example the parts were in relation to the different stories. e.g. Before Crisis -> Crisis Core -> FF7 -> DoC
  • That's really sad, now I have to wait even longer for the full game to be released. I definitely won't buy every single episode one by one.
  • To all the people being cry babies about this, really? The fact you have to wait for the next episode is such a big deal that now you won't get it at all? Such entitlement. Re:revelations 2 made it clear that by doing it as episodes you were essentially getting it early, and the full release would come shortly after the last episode. Realistically this game is going to take a good 3 years total and that's still optimistic. As someone else stated, standards have hanged and this game was massive even for its time, so doing it this way likely means getting access to it earlier but by the time it's finished would coincide with a full release. Also keep in mind we might see more than just the core game incorporated this way, and characters like Zach and Vincent might get more play time pre planned rather than as an after thought. I am still optimistic, as they already granted my biggest wish in modernizing the combat. Sorry for all you who don't know how to see the world without your rose colored googles, but I've played the shit out of this game and still love it, but I don't want. Remake that's exactly the same as the game we already have. I prefer a game my siblings and kids will enjoy having grown up without turn based combat and this never actually developing a taste for it, versus a game that pleases old people like me who have already experienced this masterpiece.
  • While I'm disappointed with this news and other obvious deviations from the original, this will still probably be a day-1-buy for me. Maybe it will be great....
  • @24 revelations is an example of it being done right though. It was released weekly. However, look at Telltale Games ( excluding Minecraft, which has been regular) and Life is Strange for sporadic release schedules, or indeed Half Life 2 and Sins Episodes. This could potentially go tits up. I think it will all be finished in time for the 20th anniversary though (FF7 was 1997, am i right?)
  • @24 i do like the idea of them reinventing the wheel on the combat though. I triedto play ff7 on my vita few years back, and didnt think as much of the combat as i did on ps1.
  • I was starting to get mad as most of the people here, but after reading the interview, which topic creator should have read before misleading the article with his ..."WTF", Nomura has some strong points about the multiple parts. People, I recommend you search elsewhere for the full transalate interview and then make your comments based of the full information.
  • slow claps.....way to ruin you golden nugget squeenix you out of touch douche bags
  • jerric you clown....how is wanting a FULL game being entitled? All who have played ff7 and loved it and want it remastered deserve nothing less than the game in its entirety. Some people on this website would defend shit sandwiches honestly!!!
  • @30 yeah, it seemed a strange thing to say. I always get the full series of an episodic game nowadays, due to agonisingly long waits for GoT and Life is Stranges concluding episode. I want to play through a story from start to finish.
  • Added advantage is episodic series quite regularly go on sale too :P so I can get it cheaper and play it altogether :)
  • #24 - Please don't use words you don't know how-to as insults; being part of the meme/internet-"hive mind" isn't something you should aspire to.
  • Everybody likes that epsiodic shit, they dug their own grave with this one. Buy more TT games, people
  • @30 it's been said, but there's an example of an episodic game doing it well, and telltale isn't it. I'm not really a fan of how they did it but revelations was good. Telltale seems to have spread themselves incredibly thin with all the projects they took on at once. We know next to nothing besides the basic concept so I'm waiting till I know more to pass judgement, and that was my point. If the first "chapter" takes us as far as the escape of midgar, that's a solid chunk of story and hours and a good place to leave off till the next chapter. @33 I looked over my post, and I still don't know what you are on about.
  • Well, this is a crushing blow...am so hyped about this game! But then again maybe it's not so bad for me,I'll play the first episode then while we wait another five plus years for the next I'll be working on my ridiculous back log...or I'll be dead in which case I won't give a toss.
  • He's referring to you using the word "entitlement" concerning people that don't like the episodic format that's being discussed. And frankly, he's completely right. That word makes no sense in this context. If you were, say, talking about the people that expect to get the re-released PS2 games for free because they bought the original PS2 versions a long time ago, then you would be making sense. But this is an upcoming product being talked about here, that people are considering paying money for. They aren't obligated to do so, and if they don't think it'll be worth it in such a state, they certainly aren't being entitled. They're just being smart about it and voicing their concerns.
  • Just read the interview, i can actually see why they are doing this. It was a massive, massive game at the time, and if you want to do full ingame cutscenes with dialogue and motion capture, its going to be a ridiculous size with that alone. Add in all the textures, i mean, we are literally talking about a world bigger than any Bethesda game. Using a flat green grass texture to cover the world is simply not todays standards, Think of the Golden Saucer...look at the screen of the ps1 version and use your imagination....in 2016 graphics, that is an insane amount of textures and assets right there. I can actually understand why they are doing it this way, will still wait for the whole lot as i intend to do a marathon.
  • Remember FF7 Fans ... you wanted this. and now it's a bitter pill to swallow.
  • Eh whatever. I'm not going to go back to every single time I've ever seen someone get upset over one detail that they don't even have all the info on, and respond with "well I'm not buying it now because it's shit and it's going to fail". As far as I'm concerned I stand by my choice of words, because at a glance it comes off as spoiled. I hate the episodic format, but with how little detail we have, I have no reason to declare I'm not buying it as if I totally was before now, and SE should be oh so sorry for making sensitive little me upset. I recall there being a lot of people who said the exact same thing the last video, when they revealed there would be changes to combat. Same people or different? Not sure it maters. "I was totally going to buy this day one without even a second glance or review, but now that this one piece of info I don't even have the details on is revealed FORGET IT!"
  • Why does a remake need to be told in episodes? This is just money grabbing shit.
  • Hahahaha!!! All the FF7 fanboys collectively losing their shit. Albeit, rightfully so.
  • Well, now they oficially *@cked it up. No longer want it.
  • Now available the $150 Final Fantasy VII Remake season pass!
  • First news they said they will make FF7 remake, it give us happy so much. So i feel like they take part of happy feeling off from us that they said it will be multi-part. WTF! I thought word remake mean be remake all of history of FF7. not some from history. Feel like they do little lie to us.
  • I'm livid. Anyone who is livid needs to let Square Enix know. Keep this game as a full game, not separated into parts. Final Fantasy VII doesn't need this BS.
  • No longer a day 1 for me, will wait for the full game with all the episodes to be released. Probably another 3 years knowing Square.
  • I wonder if people realise that RPG's are naturally episodic... offering an episodic take and then a full release once its all done is perfectly fine provided its done right. I won't judge this till its done, if its like Resi Revilations 2 was then ill be fine with it, there was nothing wrong with that kind of release. People are over reacting to an idea like morons as per usual, its fine to be concerned, but its far to early to tell if its good or not. Hell, the original FF7 was technically an episodic game if you just included the fact there where 3 disks, 3 episodes, never mind the separate sections of the game. Given how well episodic gaming has proven to be when done right, I say wait till there's more details and see how things are looking.
  • I will accept this, only if it is sold in three parts.
  • No open world exploration or airships or non of that shit ever allowed to be in a ff game again. Fuck square. I just wanted a ff game that wasn't linear and like 13. I will whine all I want with my wallet shut. And fuck all those that don't like me complaining about it. This is the god damn internet
  • *Braces self for numerous downvotes.* If you're crying doom and gloom over this announcement, and you haven't read, or at least have an understanding of, the translated press release, then your uninformed opinions are irrelevant. Educate yourself. I'll take "FFVII: Parts 1/2/3/etc" over "FFVII: Abridged" any day.
  • lol 46, what a tool. see how far your lividity gets you with squeenix. they will take your money either way and i am sure you will still be giving it to them. get off your high horse.
  • the MOST IMPORTANT QUESTION is DOES THIS MEAN WE CAN EXPECT A EARLY RELEASE!!?? I just want to play it already!!!
  • this is the worst news ive ever heard my entire life...and ive survived cancer
  • Who cares, we got the pc port on ps4 with trophies thats all i need. Fuck a remake. And if your so worried about it wait for the full game to release on disc jesus christ.
  • @55 I might get that actually. The plat might persuade me to actually do everything rather than going straight to the crater and doing the Omnislash battle/cutscene, missing the Weapon bosses etc. Still interested in this, but got enough games across ps4 and xb1 to tide me over until I see what happens with this. If its shite, I will just buy the port. Problem solved.
  • I wonder how they mean this as in episodic like those telltale games or episodic as in FF7 FF7-2 and FF7-3 Cloud's Return (or something like that)
  • I guess I'll just hold out until it comes to Xbox One when the whole timed exclusive deal runs out or until a physical version of the game comes out... Sony, once again, you almost got me to buy a PS4. Now it looks like SFV or Shenmue III will be their best chance now.
  • I'll wait to see the product before whingeing. All I'll say is that the battle system is critical. Stuff that up and they'll be bankrupt before they can release the second installment.
  • I will probably get the first one which should be the bombing mission then wait for all the rest to be released. Must be a massive game for them to release it this way or maybe it is to extend it's timed exclusiveness before going to other platformers. Though it should just say on for PC and PlayStation only. Sony really needs to have more exclusives that define them. They give up on too many. When you think of Sony PlayStation what characters do you see as the current face for them now. I see current since they always lose them at some point ie. Crash Spyro Lara Croft.
  • Meh. I'll just let the fanboys pay a ton to Square, and pick it up in heavily discounted form (or possibly free) a few months later. You know, like ALL Square games nowadays.
  • Fuck them guess I'm not buying it
  • @51 I completely agree. Is rather have it perfect then rushed and flawed
